Having
selected our design, we began to make solid representations of our prototype.
We constructed a mock-up model with foam (measured in millimeters) that matched
our design. We determined the dimensions of our future bottle opener from these
dimensions. We particularly measured the dimensions of the bottle cap and
translated that into a dimension across the opening of the bottle cutter. For
the purpose of comfort, we adjusted the length of the handle as well as the
width. Below is the foam mock-up.
We then began to input the dimensions of our mock-up into
Solidworks in order to get a finished product in Delrin. Designing the right
half of our bottle opener (as the opener was designed to be symmetrical) with
splines and lines, we mirrored the right half to create a left half to make a
base and then extruded that base to our desired width.
